Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Facility Manager or designate, the incumbent will primarily focus on landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks, ensuring that the college's outdoor spaces are well-kept and aesthetically pleasing. This includes lawn care, tree pruning, flowerbed preparation, seeding, and general landscape cleanup. The student will also assist with basic building maintenance tasks, including minor repairs, painting, and upkeep of common areas within campus buildings.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks under the supervision of the Maintenance Assistant.
  • Assist with setting up and moving equipment, furniture, and supplies as needed.
  • Operate and maintain various grounds-keeping equipment such as front-end loaders, lawn tractors, snow blowers, mowers, skid steers, and hand tools to maintain roadways, parking areas, walkways, and landscaped areas.
  • Apply fertilizer and perform pruning of shrubs, hedges, trees, and transplant seedlings as required.
  • Perform general maintenance on grounds equipment, including forklift operation and record-keeping.
  • Clean and maintain common areas, ensuring they remain tidy and safe for all occupants; collect and dispose of trash.
  • Prepare and manage seasonal lawn care, including seeding, laying sod, landscaping, and general cleanup.
  • Prepare and maintain flowerbeds for planting, watering, weeding, and cleanup during summer and fall.
 
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance programs and procedures in commercial facilities, including the operation of commercial-grade grounds equipment.
  • Familiarity with lawn, tree, shrub, and floral care.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System).
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.
  • Ability to operate a variety of grounds-keeping equipment.
  • Must be capable of lifting heavy objects and working at heights, depths, and in confined spaces.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook).
