ABOUT US
Sioux Valley Dakota Nation (SVDN), formerly called the Oak River Reserve, is located on the banks of the Assiniboine River in Southwestern Manitoba. The Oak River Reserve was created by an Order in Council of the Government of Canada in 1876. Sioux Valley Dakota Nation is the largest Dakota Nation in Canada with a membership of approximately 2500. SVDN is not a signatory to a Treaty.

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Human Resource (HR) Director will demonstrate outstanding people skills to effectively and efficiently manage personnel and human resources programs and initiatives that are aligned with overall business and Nation objectives. Responsibilities include supervising HR personnel, dealing with employee grievances and disputes, supporting employee development, enhancing job satisfaction, designing onboarding procedures, implementing HR strategies that support business objectives, mitigating risk, structuring benefit packages, maintaining employee records, designing accountability mechanisms, and overseeing overall employment needs.
The Director of Human Resources plays a pivotal role in ensuring both exceptional employee support and effective organizational management. This is a leadership role responsible for managing the organization’s human resource needs while supporting the design and implementation of workplace policy and procedure. This position requires a strategic thinker who can balance employee engagement, recruitment, and compliance with fostering enriching, community-based experiences for Sioux Valley community and its employees.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, implement, and evaluate recruitment strategies and HR policies to meet organizational needs.
- Create job descriptions, salary scales, and competency appraisal systems.
- Advise employees on HR policies, benefits programs, and career opportunities.
- Oversee employee wellness, performance appraisals and coordinate promotion or dismissal processes.
- Support training and development, through SVDN’s employment and training department, by working with the program managers.
- Conduct exit interviews to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Research and implement employee benefits and health and safety practices.
- Support strategic efforts, aligning HR initiatives with financial constraints.
- Ensure effective communication of policy & expectations across the organization.
- Maintain compliance with all employment laws and ensure accurate and timely HR record-keeping.
- Design and deliver training programs.
- Facilitate critical incident debriefings and implement measures to reduce workplace incidents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree or certificate in Human Resource management (like CPHR).
- Extensive experience f(5+ years) working in HR and leading teams.
- Exceptional leadership and team-building skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse workforce.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities.
- High degree of accuracy, attention to detail and critical thinking
- Ability to manage competing demands and to be highly organized
- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and personal information in a confidential manner
- Ability to provide as a condition of employment a Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check and Clear Child Abuse Registry Check
- Valid drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultural, customs, values, and traditions
